Beloved Woman and Community Leader Succumbs After Long Illness

Funeral services for Mrs. Frank C. Shute were held at 3:30 yesterday at the Methodist Church. Interment followed at Myrtle Grove Cemetery with hundreds of friends paying tribute to the beloved woman and community leader.

Mrs. Shute died at 10:30 Tuesday night after a lingering illness of many months. Her condition had been critical for some time and last Thursday there was a turn for the worse. She held on for five days and the end came peacefully with the immediate family about her.

The love and esteem in which she was held was amply testified to by the number of friends paying their respects at the services and funeral. Beautiful floral offerings banked her final resting place. Words of sympathy were extended Dr. Shute and members of the family on the loss of a beloved one.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. Frank C. Shute, her son, Dr. Frank C. Shute Jr., two daughters, Georgia and Vera Shute, and one brother, C. L. Hayes Jr.

The following tribute was paid Mrs. Virginia Vermel Shute by a close friend and neighbor:

    Tribute of Respect
Another neighbor across the street has solved the Great Adventure. I have witnessed so many deaths among friends and acquaintances, that I have become a confirmed believer that "whom the Gods love, die young." Death loves a shining mark. When he leveled his shaft at Mel Hayes Shute, he took from our midst a woman whose price was far above rubies. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother, a staunch friend, a public spirited citizen - charitable and kind. She was of distinguished ancestry. Her paternal grandfather, James G. Hayes, a captain in the C.S.A. army, lived with friends and neighbors in Plaquemine Brolee and Church Point, and after battling for the stars and bars, was by his comrades elected sheriff of this parish. He was fearless to the verge of temerity.

Her father, C. L. Hayes, was a chip of the old block. After serving for 16 years as a Deputy Sheriff, he was elected Chief of Police of this City, and held this office up to his death. Her mother was a sweet, lovely character, daughter of Dr. Jones, an Alabamian who had settled in our midst.

Mel was reared by "Aunt Mag," the widow of her grandfather. She was a school teacher, deeply religious. Under her guidance, Mel grew to be the splinded character I have attempted to described.

Years ago she married Dr. Frank Shute, and two splended children were granted them. Dr. Creighton Shute of New Orleans, and Georgia, of this city. Her life was a happy one. She should have died hereafter.
I repeat, "The good die young."
    "The good die first,
And they whose hearts are dry as a summer dust,
    Burn to the socket."
From the earliest ages, the Christians have buried their dead.
"Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the resurrection."
I stood by, and when I beheld her remains being consigned to their resting place, I felt that I could add another invocation.
    "Lay her in the earth:
And from her fair and unpolluted flesh
    May violets spring."

Goodbye Mel. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!
