Dr. Brackson Jason Cox, of Christy creek neighborhood in Rowan county, passed through here Tuesday to visit his son, Brack Cox, of Torrent, and attend the Red River association of Baptists which will convene tomorrow at some church in Estill county. The old doctor tells us that he has enjoyed the best of health during the past year, and does not feel the infirmities of old age, though he is 89 past.

[WHO IS SARAH CAUDELL ...just states "at home"] Is this the correct Braxton Jason Cox?

Source: Our Family Tree Roots and Branches by Nora Cox Clark page 44

Our Cox family was supposed to have come to Kentucky in 1804 or 1807 from North Carolina. They were in Wilkes County, NC which was formed from Burke and Surry being organized in 1777. In the first census of Wilkes County 1790 our Braxton Cox was listed. They came to Owsley and Letcher County, Kentucky and at the time of the Civil War four sons of Dr. Jason Brackston cox fought in that war; two for the north and two for the south. Some say that Dr. Jason also served during the war, but we have not found the records nor which side he would have been on.

Joel Sturgis Cox volunteered for the Confederate Army (South) in Whitesburg, Letcher County, Kentucky in 1861. He is grandfather of Nora Cox Clark. He was Pvt. Co. A. 1st Battalion Kentucky Mounted Rifles. Grandfather Joel never forgave Braxton D. Cox, his brother, for fighting for the North.

At age 17 Braxton D. Cox volunteered for the Co. G. C. 8 Ky Inf. for the Union Army (North) At age 20 he was in Co. A. 4 Ky Mounted Infantry Pvt. He later became a doctor, married Elizabeth Spencer, and he delivered the children of Leah and Jason Cox.

Sampson D. Cox, Pvt. Co. B. 10 Regt. Ky Infantry enlisted Sept. 9, 1862 at Whitesburg, Letcher Co., Ky. Residence Letcher Co. Kentucky; captured at Cynthiana, Ky.; was prisoner in Rock Island, Ill.

One other brother fought during the war, but we hav enot been able to find if it was William, Ambrose, or Jason B.

[Note from Sharon Kouns: It was William Allison Cox, the brother of the above that served in the CW. This information has been provided by his descendant, Jan Covey of California.]

None of the records show the maiden name of Lydia, wife of Jason Brackston Cox. Since Joel Sturgis Cox was her first son and the name "Sturgis" sounds like a surname it could be that she was Lydia Sturgis, butr we have never found this in any records; it is just a possibility.

Joel Sturgis Cox married Widow Naoma C. Reasor Hobbs in Lee County, Virginia, on May 24, 1866. She was the mother of three sons. They moved to Wolfe County, Kentucky, and their family is as follows:

..near the mouth of Devils Creek, now known as Big Andy. (This community took its name from a conversation between Dr. Brack Cox and Andy Spencer. Mr. Spencer wanted to donate a portion of his land for a Community Church and name it Spencer. Dr. Cox suggested he donate the land and he would call the settlement Big Andy.)

From Jan Covey, Dec. 20, 2009:
Sharon, I just received a letter from National Archives. They have found a Confederate Staff Officer's File for an Acting Assistant Surgeon, B. J. Cox who served from Kentucky in the Confederate States Army. Will forward my findings when I get the actual copies. It probably will take a few weeks. What a surprise!!! --Best Wishes, Jan [P.S. It's possible he was a contract physician. If so, it would explain why he doesn't show up on confederate soldier records.]

Hazel Green Herald, Hazel Green, KY 17 May 1894

Dr. B. J. Cox, of Elliottsville, Rowan County, passed through here Wednesday en route home. He had been visiting his sons, Dr. Drack [sic Brack], Samp and Joel, all of whom live in our county. Dr. Cox, sr., was 84 years of age on the 15th of March last but looks to be much younger, and can ride horseback much better than many not half so old. He told the writer that he can ride after night and frequently does so inn the practice of medicine, and that for two years past he has not felt a pain. He has been a tobacco chewer since he was 23 years old, but does not smoke. Dr. Cox is connected with the Rock Spring association of Baptists, and still takes an active part in its affairs. He looks to be in perfect health and from present indications there are yet many years of usefulness before him.

    Death of Dr. Jason Cox
    Printed in Hazel Green Herald
    February 20th 1902

A dispatch from Mt. Sterling to Louisville
Evening Post, under the date of 14th inst., says
news has just reached there of the death of Dr. Jason Cox, at his home in Wolfe county. Dr. Cox lived in Rowan county, where he had been practicing medicine for years. Semi-annually or annually he visited his son, Dr. Breck Cox, who lives in the west end of this county, and it was during his last visit that the end came. In passing he always stopped and had a chat with us, but when he passed the last time we were out in town and he left word that he would stop and see us as he passed back. That has been about two months ago. Dr. Cox was a remarkably vigorous man, and practiced his profession right up to the last visit we speak of. He had in his possession papers that showed him to be 107 years old, but he was as active as many at 50. He was a very interesting conversationalist, and could hold one spell bound for hours in listening to a relation of his experience. Some eight years since we met him for the first time, and afterward he never failed to stop and talk for an hour or so. Peace to his ashes.

    619. COX - The Cox history in this column interests me, as I am a son of Thomas William Cox, born Oct. 11, 1824, who was the son of Nathan Cox, who was the son of Braxton Cox, as I have it. My great-grandfather came from Ireland in the 1700's, and settled in North Carolina. His son, Jason Cox, a doctor by profession, located first in Letcher county, Kentucky, then in Perry county, Kentucky, and Ohio county, Kentucky, and with his brother Eben Cox, located in Montgomery county, Kentucky. My father, Thomas William Cox, had eight children, of whom only three are living, myself, Charles E. Cox, Frank M. Cox of Bartellsville, Okla., Mrs. Annie P. Spencer, of Chicago, Ill. I would apprecaite knowing whether the Jonathan Cox of this query was related to my grandfather, Nathan Cox, and more information of this family. (signed) Charles E. Cox, Petersburg, Ky.
Note (below this query) - Rev. John E. Cox, 722 Blackfork Avenue, Evansville, Answer 587 (will type below this -smk) April 14, writes that Jonathan Cox of this query was one of the Posey County, Indiana pioneers and a brother of Jesse Cox. These brothers married sisters of the Murphy family. - Editor.
    (here is query 587)
    587. Cox - Jonathan (343). There were eight pioneers that settled in Posey county, Indiana, of the Cox family. All were from North Carolina, and two sets of brothers and probably all cousins. The first one here was "Double Head" John Cox, whose land was surveyed in 1806, two years after the government secured all souther Indiana from the Indians. This man was educated and by profession a surveyor. He had a brother, Jonathan Cox. A little later "General" Joseph Cox came. He had military experience (Indian warfare) in Kentucky during the war of 1812 and was chosen leader of the pioneers of southern Indiana, hence the "general." Jesse Cox and his brother Jonathan came about the same time. Then my grandfather, John L. Cox arrived. Then Furneyfort and Absolom Cox came. All these men have many descendants. We have a Cox family organization, of which I am president, and at our last reunion we had 400 registered. We know these pioneers came from North Carolina, but do not know the county. They were all famers, all Democrats, and all of the Primitive Baptist church. The Cox family is related to the Thomas Price family through marriage, my grandmother was a Price, and I have written and published a history of Thomas Price and his descendants. (signed) The Rev. John E. Cox, 722 Blackfork Avenue, Evansville.

Ambrose Cox, Sr., lived in the western part of the county, married Miss Sallie Reed. He was a good citizen and neighbor and by industry and economy acquired considerable wealth. His father Matthew Cox senior was a native of the valley of Virginia. His wife's maiden name was Dickerson, who first married a man by the name of Spencer. She was a widow when Matthew Cox married her. Their union was blessed with six sons and one daughter, viz: Carter, Maston, Aras, Matthew, Ambrose, Braxton, and Delphine. The latter mar- ried Wm. Roberts, Matthew Cox, Sr. was a soldier in Col. George Wash- ington's regiment with General Braddock at Pittsburgh in 1755 when the English were defeated. Col. Washington requested General Braddock to allow him to take his regiment and fight the indians, assuring him that under proper discipline he could defeat them. But the General replied: "It is high time when a Virginia Buckskin attempts to advise a British General." The French and Indians poured a deadly fire into the English ranks until General Braddock was mortally wounded, and exclaimed: "Colonel Washington, what shall we do?" Washington answered: "For God's sake retreat!" Matthew Cox was with the body-guard that conveyed the wounded General form the fatal battle-ground. He died soon after. The Virginia regiment came near starving before they reached the valley of Virginia. Matthew Cox and family lived for some years in Halifax County, Virginia, and then moved to Floyd county, as previously stated, then moved to Wilkes County, NC, now Caldwell Co.
