(from: Carter County a pictorial history by George Wolfford: "Society didn't always mean ready cash. When Will Ward wed Thursa Virgin in 1843, he owned 'a large but somewhat embarassed estate' while she 'seems to have been in indigent circumstances.' Sale of property for a debt precipitated this mid-40's clash involving George Kouns."
William Hogan stepped in the house and came out with his gun and James Bowling followed him in a brisk walk. Hogan attempted to level the gun at Kouns and Bowling caught hold of it and prevented him - Witness and some others also interposed and took the gun away and shot it off. When witness looked toward Kouns, Andrew Hogan had taken up a pole 7-10 feet long and struck Kouns with it. Kouns dodged and the lick glanced. He retreated, picked up a slat and turned on Andrew, and Andrew retreated and Kouns pursued . . . William Hogan came after Kouns with a butcher knife and Bowling took it away from him. Kouns struck Andrew on the head with the slat and inflicted a wound which bled profusely. Andrew threw a large rock at Kouns, but missed. It was said several times, run Kouns, or they will murder you, for they have knives." (I don't know if this goes with this George but will leave here until further research can be done. smk)
