    Notes:

Author of "Our Family Tree, Roots & Branches"

    Her words from her book:
When Nora was born her father named her Nora Golden Cox, but in later years changed it to "Belle" after one of her schoolteachers. The following is written by Nora Cox Clark:

After my Dad's death we moved to Idaho arriving Dec. 26, 1909. Mother's brother, Even Jackson Spencer, had a farm in the Randall Flat District near Troy, Idaho. He wrote to Mother that if she would move to Idaho he would help her with us children. So plans were made for the move and Mother sold all her livestock, machinery and household goods so she would have the money to go to Idaho. She had a very good watchdog that was brought into the house at night to guard the door. The night before we left the dog awoke Mother by making a sucking growl at the door. She got up quickly and there were some people outside lunging against the door trying to get in. She screamed, "John, get the gun!" and when the ones outside heard her theyleft. Mother stayed up the rest of the night in case they came back. Since they didn't have telephones to spread news in those days she always figured it was not "strangers" but someone that knew she had sold everything and was leaving the next day so must have cash in the house.

We traveled on the train to Idaho and Mother fixed lunches for us to have something to eat on the train. Milford was to care for me; John to care for Carl; Jess and Brackston were to stay close to Mother who was carrying Charlie. Milford was taking me to the restroom and I had my arms stretched out and got a finger caught in the door. I can still remember it clearly. One day a lady with a little boy was sitting across the aisle from us. The lady had fixed a lunch for her little boy; but I wanted his lunch and I cried. The lady asked Mother how far we were going and when she was told "Idaho" she gave me the lunch because they weren't going very far.

We arrived on Dec. 26, 1909, and lived with Uncle Even Spencer and family until spring. Times were hard and the bank foreclosed on his farm in the spring and the Spencer family moved to Canada. James Harvey Bailey was staying at the Spencers. He was born and raised in Lee County, Virginia. Mother and James H. Bailey were married that year and we moved into a log house owned by Lenard Marks.

One day we needed some groceries so Mother and Jess walked several miles to Troy, Idaho, to get them. John and Milford were working somewhere so they were not at home. Brackston was suppose to take care of us little ones. There were a couple of men working in the timber not far from our house. Brackston decided to go over to where they were so he left locking the door on the rest of us. Carl decided he wanted to go out too, so he locked Charles and I in the house. Charles was little but walking and he got one of the boy's coats and put it in the open fireplace. There were hot coals in there and it scared me, so I thought that if I got it out and put it under the bed no one would ever know. When Mother and Jess arrived home the house was full of smoke; there was lots of excitement for awhile. Jess had carried a 50lb sack of flour on his shoulders for several miles but he really could move when he thought the house was on fire.

We moved to Mr. Lowry's farm in the Randall Flat District. Mr. Lwory was the depot agent in Troy, Idaho, then. At this place my brother, George Lee Bailey was born April 16, 1912. Mabel Spencer, Dave Spencer's daughter, came and took care of Mother and George and cooked for the rest of us. James H. Bailey had left my Mother and moved away; he never did see his son George. James had a tragic death at Northport, Washington in 1916.

We spent one Christmas in a sled to Avon, Idaho, to visit Fergerson (Forge) Bailey. I was just a kid at the time, but heard later that he had killed a man in Virginia or Kentucky. He left his family and fled to Idaho. I don't know if he spent the rest of his years in Idaho or what happened to him....

From book by Nora Cox Clark:
"Our grandfather Joel Sturgis Cox had blue eyes, sandy hair and whiskers. Most of the ancestors for the Cox line had light blue eyes and light sandy hair to medium brown hair. Our grandmother Naomi Reasor Hobbs Cox had black hair and dark brown eyes. We have been told that she was part Cherokee Indian, but we have not been able to verify that. Since we have been able to trace most lines in Naomi's line except Susannah Jackson that married Daniel Reasor in Johnson county, Tennessee, who are Naomi's grandparents, it would seem that it would be through the Jackson line. Certainly the black straight hair and the dark eyes that appears in each generation would indicate that there is a strong blood line somewhere in the background. Rebecca Cox was six feet tall and very slim. There are many slim people in both the Cox and Spencer line."

[note from smk: Which Rebecca Cox was she referring to? ...I have heard my line also has Indian blood through Lydia Cox. If you have more, please share.]
