She was long active in the operation of the ferry at Proctorville and her children followed in her footsteps. Her two sons, Capt. George W. Smith, Sr. and Capt. Ed Smith (both deceased) operated ferry boats at Proctorville. First the Whisper and later the Arion. They knew the river and served the public faithfully many years. Of the four girls were Josephine Smith Roush, Hattie Smith Morrison, Virgie Smith Thomas and Fritz Smith Kitts. | |
