    • (COPY TO SHARON)from Larry Baker July 18, 2009:
Greetings to Cousins Sam and Helen,
Here are some odds and ends concerning Sam's grandparents, Marion Benton Spencer and Elizabeth Whisman.
Sharon and I met earlier this spring and have been sharing data. Most of my early breakthroughs came from my distant cousins, Frank Gerald Profitt and his wife, Virginia Lane. She is kin to my SMYTH line and Frank to the SPENCER/HOBBS families. They live on Big Andy and at least part of their farm once belonged to my Great Grandfather GEORGE W. SMYTH.
Jacob Copenhaver/Koppenhofer is the oldest ancestor of Elizabeth (WHISMAN) Spencer's family that I have. No dates on him, but he had a son, WOLFGANG, born about 1684 in Rublingen, Wurtenburg, Germany and died abt. 1763 Heidelburg, Lancaster Co., PA. Wolfgang Copenhaver was married to Anna Maria Haffner/ Hoffner. She died in Germany. Her oldest Whisman direct line was Johan Phillip Whisman/Wissman born abt. 1710 Darmstadt, Starkenburg, Hessen, Germany and died abt May 28, 1778 at Shenandoah Co., VA. Ofcourse Elizabeth had direct lines in the BOOTH and SHOEMAKER families as well.
This Elizabeth (WHISMAN) Spencer was a SECOND COUSIN to my G-GM, Jemima Elizabeth (WHISMAN) SMYTH/SMITH. My G-GM died in May of 1925 in LaGrange Co., IN (only a few miles from Michigan) at the home of her daughter (my GM) and her body was returned to Wolfe Co., by train. Removed at Torrent and taken up the mountain and buried on Tar Ridge. Grandma was UNABLE to make the trip as she was soon to deliver my father on MAY 25, 1925. She is buried in the tiny William B. Kincaid Cemetary. Bill was married to my GM's sister Bertha and introduced my grandparents when they were teens.
Marion Benton Spencer was also a SECOND COUSIN to my G-GM Jemima Elizabeth (WHISMAN) SMYTH/Smith.
My G-GF, George W. SMYTH (H/O of Jemima WHISMAN) "CHANGED" the spelling of the family name from SMYTH to Smith. That was sometime after 1902, as my GM has her name in the family bible as SMYTH. This George SMYTH was a son of ADDISON SMYTH who was part of the New Virginia Settlement in Lee Co., KY.
I get down that way several times a year. I always try and see Frank and Virginia and NEVER miss the chance to stop into the store at Rogers and get a COLD Ale-8 and visit with my WHISMAN/BAKER cousin Delmer Whisman.
Thanks for helping Sharon and I to sort this out.
