    • Dear Sharon,
      10/26/07

I am not sure about the circumstances surrounding my grandfathers death for certain. All I have are stories as I have not been able to find any records of the incident as of this time. The way it has been told to me is that my grandfather went with a friend to some where around Jackson to buy two hogs. They were riding grandfathers horses and after arriving at the gentlemanís farm they visited a while with him. Then it began to rain and the man offered to put up for the night one of his visitors. Unfortunately it was not my grandfather, he said he would go because he had a friend that didnít live too far away and felt that he could stay the night with him. As he started home somewhere between Jacson and Tip Top he wandered upon what he believed was his friends house, unfortunatley it was not and as he approached the house a man came around the small cabin and shot him through the stomach with a shotgun. This story has been told a thousand times it seems with varying accounts of the actual incident. The man that shot him as I have been told claimed grandpa was banging at the door of his house with malicious intent and that is why he shot him. Although evidence of the crime scene did not support this and therefore would require a trial, of which your mother and my great uncle Mose were in attendance. Apparently there were ballistic experts that had testified that the angle of the bullet did not support the story told by the shooter. In addition blood was found on the saddle of my grandpa's horse that had returned to grandpa's barn that night. The man was found not guilty at trial but as told was banished from the state. It is a tragic tale and the ramifications of this act set into motion a very hard life for dads family to overcome. But as they say what does not kill us makes us stronger.

Hope you find this interesting and pardon my writing skills,

      Russ Cox
