    Notes
    • He was shot and killed by Isaac Crabtree, as he rode into his yard on his return from the local mill. As is not unusual with folklore, handed down from generation to generation, there are several versions as to what actually led up to this killing. This much seems certain, Isaac Crabtree, with a gun in his hand went to the home of Eli Phipps and inquired about Peter. Eli was not at home but Elizabeth told him that Peter had gone to the mill and would be returning soon. Crabtree said that he would wait for him and sat behind one of the two pines standing in fount of the house, with his gun across his lap. Soon Pete returned, rode into the yard and was dismounting his horse and was shot by Crabtree. He was never aware of Crabtree's presence.
