    Notes
    • Places of residence: River Souix, Iowa. Butte, Wilsall, Bozeman, Laurel, and Alder Montana. Occupation: Railroad agent and telegrapher. Methodist. Evart and Gussie homesteaded on the Will Creek Bench outside of Roundup from 1909/10 to the early 1920's. It was dryland wheat county. The Willow Creek Bench had more rain that some other areas. They eventually sold the land but kept the mineral rights. Evart thought that there might be some oil there. They had 360 acres which they had to live on for at least 8 years, "prove up on land". By 1923 they were in Wilsall, Ruth and Esther went to grade school and high school in Wilsall. Evart was a telegrapher there. In 1925 they moved to Bozeman so that Ruth and Esther could go to Montana State University. Esther graduated from Gallatin County High School while they lived in Bozeman. While they were living in Bozeman Evart started filing for gold mining claims in the Alder Gulch area of Virginia City which was south of Bozeman. Eventually around 1933 Evart became the station agent at Alder where he stayed until her retired. In a matter of months after Evart retired he passed away at the age of 65 years, 2 months, and 22 days. Evart and Gussie had taken a trip to Mill City, Oregon, to visit their daughter Ruth and her family when he suddenly passed away after dinner one night while helping to dry the dishes with a heart attack. Evart came to Montana in 1909, was the RR station agent at Alder for 18 years from where he retired on November 4, 1950.

A letter from Esther Pewitt contained the following: "Evart graduated high school, then he went to St. Louis to live with Aunt Mary Beardsley and her husband where he went to college. He went home because Aunt Mary didn't feed him well enough". Evart then worked for the railroad for 30 years.

On Father's Day, June 17, 2001 John and Marilyn Pewitt, Chuck Harman, and Carolyn Harman Scott stopped and visited with Dale Hartford who took over as station agent at Alder when Evart retired at the end of 1950. Dale was the Station Agent from the end of 1950 until the station was closed in 1987. He then moved the old depot to a lot between Chick's Bar and the OxBow Cafe. He restored the two story section which were the living quarters and that is his house. The single story section he has his garage in and a small shop. He was so pleased to met us - his face just glowed and his eyes lit up. It was fun to see. When asked if it was hard to move the depot he responded that the only hard thing about it was getting it out from all the rocks that Evart had collected. Marilyn commented that rock collecting must be genetic! Dale also commented on Evart and Gussie's outstanding flower garden which was between the railroad tracks. Everyday the flowers would be cut and deadheaded. It was Evart and Gussie's pride and joy.
